I love A.W. Tozer’s well-known conviction: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
Strong words! But most of us would likely disagree.
Judging by how we use our time, how we think, and how we talk, we act as if the most important thing about us consists of our achievements, triumphs, and various positions and perks of power. We reflect these priorities in the things we post on social media and in the way we think and dream when no one is around.
And yet, if Tozer is right and what we think about God is the most important thing about us, then thinking correctly about God should be our most pressing priority in life. The problem is that thinking correctly and robustly about God is risky, even dangerous. It’s not possible to think correctly about God and remain unchanged. To see him genuinely is to move inescapably into a process of transformation.
This is part of the reason why we champion 2 Corinthians 3:18 at the church where I serve in Northeastern Oklahoma. “But we all with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image, from one stage of growth to another. And all this comes through the Lord who is the Holy Spirit.”
